Nintendo Co., Ltd. Global Headquarters
Located in the Minami-ku ward of Kyoto, the Nintendo Global Headquarters stands as a monolith of modern minimalism. Often referred to by fans and locals as the "White Cube," the building’s stark, clinical exterior contrasts the whimsical creativity associated with the brand. It serves as the primary administrative and strategic nerve center for the company that revolutionized the global gaming industry.
Unlike the colorful theme parks or vibrant retail stores the company operates globally, the Kyoto headquarters is intentionally understated. This design choice reflects a corporate culture of intense privacy and focus.
-
The Facade: The building is characterized by its white ceramic tiles and a lack of external ornamentation, save for the iconic Nintendo logo.
-
The Development Center: Located a short distance away is the even larger Nintendo Development Center, a high-security facility where hardware engineers and software designers collaborate on top-secret projects.
While this modern site has served as the headquarters since 2000, Nintendo’s history in Kyoto dates back to 1889. The company began as a small craft shop producing Hanafuda (playing cards).
Nintendo remained a relatively humble, small company until the release and subsequent booming popularity of beloved characters such as Donkey Kong and Mario is the 1980's. Since then, Nintendo has become a household name around the world and a titan in the gaming industry.
